Mail thief strikes 3 times at same Nanaimo home

Dec 13, 2018 | 12:12 PM

NANAIMO — The holiday season is considerably less cheerful for a Nanaimo woman after three mail packages were stolen from her home.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the three parcels were taken from the same central Nanaimo home in the last three weeks.

The most recent incident was on Dec. 5. when a black Mustang with Alberta plates driven by a man stopped outside her Dufferin St. home shortly after a courier driver delivered a parcel.

O’Brien said the woman reported the same car in the neighbourhood on days when her other packages were expected but did not arrive.

The driver of the Mustang is now considered a person of interest to help advance their investigation.

O’Brien said while it’s unfortunate packages are being taken right from the home, he said there are numerous effective ways to prevent theft.

“If you’re not going to be home have them delivered to a friend’s home, or if your work accepts parcels have it delivered to your work space,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Requesting a signature on all packages or arranging delivery when someone will be home are also successful options.

This isn’t the first time Nanaimo RCMP have alerted the community to thieves following courier trucks.

In November, a homeowner reported to police a suspcious vehicle leaving a Lantzville Rd. driveway shortly after a courier truck left.

The delivered parcel in that case was stolen and then found in nearby bushes with some of its contents missing.

O’Brien said the crime of stealing unprotected packages from doorsteps is very common locally.

A prolific offender was recently sentenced in Nanaimo to four months behind bars for multiple crimes, including possessing stolen mail belonging to several people on Vancouver Island.
