Nanaimo Fire Rescue warns of phone scam asking for money on its behalf

Nov 23, 2018 | 4:36 PM

NANAIMO — The City and Nanaimo Fire Rescue are warning residents of a phone scam.

Deputy chief Tim Doyle told NanaimoNewsNOW the City was alerted on Friday afternoon by a resident saying someone called them claiming to be from Nanaimo Fire Rescue to solicit money.

“The resident said the scammer was using our recent smoke alarm initiative during Fire Prevention Week in October as the cover for soliciting those funds,” Doyle said. “We would never call the public on behalf of the fire department to solicit funds in that manner.”

Doyle said anyone who receives a similar call should report it to Nanaimo RCMP. He said they’ve only received one report but there could be others.
