UPDATE: Parent offering ride to Coal Tyee elementary students causes serious misunderstanding

Nov 13, 2018 | 4:07 PM

NANAIMO — Police have confirmed a miscommunication led to concerns about a suspicious encounter with two Coal Tyee Elementary students on Tuesday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW a parent, who recognized the students as friends of their own child, offered them a ride to school.

The students then went directly to school and informed a staff member about the encounter, which prompted a letter home to parents and an investigation by the Nanaimo RCMP.

After speaking to investigators, the parent apologized and recognized offering unsolicited rides to students isn’t appropriate behaviour.
