Replica Uzi, drugs and knives found in Nanaimo Parkway takedown

Nov 8, 2018 | 3:32 PM

NANAIMO — Despite being under a five-year firearms prohibition, a replica Uzi and ammunition was allegedly recovered from a man in a stolen truck during a takedown on the Nanaimo Parkway.

Nanaimo RCMP said the fake gun, as well as suspected cocaine and knives, was found on Declan Briggs O’Reilly when he was arrested in a traffic stop at the intersection of the Parkway and Northfield Rd. Wednesday afternoon.

O’Reilly was handed the five-year firearms prohibition on Sept. 30, 2017. He’s previously been charged with driving while prohibited, for which he paid a fine.

He was arrested on Wednesday after officers spotted an allegedly stolen Dodge Ram pickup on the Parkway and they quickly executed a takedown.

A police car was damaged in the incident, hit by an out of jurisdiction cop car suffering a brake malfunction, RCMP said. The car was hit with enough speed and force to rip off a door.

RCMP previously said it was the suspect who rammed into the cop car.

Two officers received minor injuries and didn’t require a trip to the hospital.

O’Reilly will be held in custody ahead of a scheduled court appearance on Nov. 13.
