Oct 31, 2018 | 10:15 AM

NANAIMO — The union representing striking Canada Post employees announced Thursday morning strike action is no longer in several Vancouver Island communities, including Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Parksville-Qualicum Beach.

185 regional unionized postal workers were off the job Wednesday, to back their demands as contract negotiations remain stalled with their employer.

EARLIER:

Strike action by more than 50,000 Canada Post employees across the country now has an impact on the mid-island.

Canada Postal Workers Union members in the Nanaimo area are participating in rotating strike action on Wednesday, involving 185 members stretching from Lake Cowichan to Bowser.

Wayde Heckford, president of the Nanaimo local of the CPWU, told NanaimoNewsNOW it’s unclear if regional strike action will stretch into Thursday.

“They’ll let us know, we’re supposed to go back at 9 a.m. but we don’t know, it might be longer than that.”

Rotating strike action by Canada Post employees have typically been 24-hours long, but work stoppages in some communities have lasted two days.

Heckford was joined by dozens of colleagues at the Canada Post’s regional distribution centre in Nanaimo on East Wellington Rd. Wednesday morning.

Canada Post employees are also participating in Halloween strike action in Port Alberni, the Comox Valley and Campbell River.

A special mediator is assigned in a bid to resolve the labour dispute.
