Suspected car thief takes off after crash shuts down highway in Lantzville

NANAIMO — Police are looking for an alleged car thief after a mysterious single-vehicle crash on Hwy. 19 in Lantzville left glass shattered all over the road.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW a northbound car smashed into a lamp stand on Hwy. 19 at Ware Rd. at 4:30 a.m. Friday. He said the car was destroyed, while the male driver ran off.

“Our police dogs attended, they tracked for a while but couldn’t find where the individual went,” O’Brien said.

Northound traffic on Hwy. 19 between Ware and Superior Roads was detoured Friday morning to allow crews to clean up the glass, according to O’Brien.

“The vehicle was filled with empties and glass was shattered all over the highway.”

He said paramedics were called to the scene on the assumption the driver would have been injured.

Oceanside RCMP confirm the black Acura involved was stolen Thursday night from a Parksville home.
