NANAIMO — An elderly man was taken to hospital after driving into the Newcastle Channel.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue and bystanders all helped pull an 82-year-old man from the upside down car Friday afternoon near the intersection of St. George St. and Stewart Ave.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said bystanders were quick to jump into the water and help Nanaimo Fire Rescue pull the man from the water.

O’Brien said though the driver’s condition is unknown, he did not appear to have any life-threatening injuries.
