Safety boat reported stolen from Harbour Air dock in Nanaimo marina

Sep 28, 2018 | 8:07 AM

NANAIMO — Harbour Air is now incredibly concerned if there’s an accident because they won’t be able to reach their planes on the water.

Their safety boat was stolen sometime overnight Thursday or early morning Friday, Sept. 28 from their dock in the Nanaimo Marina, beside the Lighthouse Bistro & Pub.

Base manager John Winter told NanaimoNewsNOW crews noticed the theft when opening operations Friday morning around 6 a.m.

“We use it in the event of an emergency should the aircraft lose power on the water or need some assistance coming into the docking area,” Winter said. “It’s like having a life boat aboard a ferry. You never want to use it but it’s good to know it’s there ready to be used.”

The fairly noticeable, 19-foot rigid inflatable boat is believed to be one of only two on the Island. The second is used by Harbour Air in Victoria.

Staff are currently sifting through security footage from the area while also checking other local marinas.

Nanaimo RCMP confirmed the boat was reported stolen and are investigating.

Considering recent trends, the boat theft is unsurprising.

Earlier this month, Nanaimo Mounties reported 16 boats were stolen, primarily from the inner harbour, since May. They recently launched a bait boat in reaction to the rash of robberies, and have also dedicated extra resources to the issue.

If anyone sees the boat, they’re urged to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
