NANAIMO — Three sailors who left from the French Creek Marina were forced to abandon ship after their boat caught fire off the Nanaimo shore.

The Nanaimo Port Authority confirmed their boat caught fire around 10:30 Thursday morning as they were heading south from the French Creek area.

Authority Harbour Master Rod Grounds told NanaimoNewsNOW two adults and a child were rescued at sea by emergency services including the Canadian Coast Guard.

Grounds said while everyone was in good spirits after the fiery ordeal, one adult and the child were taken to hospital with signs of hypothermia after being in the water for 45 minutes.
