NANAIMO — The Clippers lost a divisional battle 5-1 to the Victoria Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon.

A three minute span in the first period ended up being decisive in Victoria’s favour.

Goals from Alex Newhook, Jordan Guiney, and Carter Berger gave the visitors a 3-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.

Ethan Scardina ripped home a power play goal to get Nanaimo on the board in the second period but Victoria answered with a power play tally of their own by Alex Campbell to take a 4-1 lead to the dressing room.

An early wraparound goal by Brady MacDonald capped off the scoring early in the third to give Grizzlies the first game in the season series.

Kurtis Chapman got the win in net for Victoria and Landon Pavlisin split the goaltending duties with Jordan Naylor.

The shots on goal finished 42-15 in Victoria’s favour with Naylor being particularly sharp in the third making 19 saves on 20 shots.

On the man advantage the Clippers were 1/3 while Victoria went 1/5.

Sunday’s Three Stars were Alex Newhook (1g,1a), Jeremie Bucheler (2a) and Jonathan Stein (1a).

This coming weekend the Clippers have games against the Chilliwacks Chiefs and Powell River Kings.

The defending RBC Cup champs are in Nanaimo on Friday and the Kings visit on Saturday.
