City of Nanaimo not increasing water restrictions despite record-breaking heat

NANAIMO — As drought warnings and water restrictions increase across B.C., the City of Nanaimo remains steady at stage two water restrictions.

Despite the record-breaking heat, public works director Bill Sims said further water restrictions aren’t anticipated

“We’ve had droughts over the last three or four years and we’re on track with last year,” he told NanaimoNewsNOW. At the end of July, the Jump Lake water reservoir was at roughly 90 per cent and isn’t expected to fall below 50 per cent by the end of the hot season.

Under stage two water restrictions, whether your house number is even or odd matches up with which day you can water your lawn, wash your car and fill your pool. Lawns can be watered from 7 to 10 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. for up to two hours. There are some exemptions, such as if you recently seeded your lawn or planted a new tree.

Sims said while they won’t increase up to stage 3 water restrictions, their message about water conservation isn’t changing.

“We encourage people to let their lawns go golden and to conserve water where they can,” he said.

Sims said enforcing higher water restrictions can be a challenge and they want to ensure higher water restrictions are only used when absolutely necessary.

Many parts of the RDN are currently at stage two water restrictions as well with similar rules as the City of Nanaimo.
