Unique event brings Nanaimo garage sales together in one parking lot

NANAIMO — The many Nanaimo residents who love a good weekend garage sale can get all of their shopping done in one trip this weekend.

The City of Nanaimo is hosting their second annual Trunk Sale on Saturday, where roughly 100 people will load up their cars in the Country Club Shopping Centre and sell their goods right from the back of their car.

Everything from clothes to appliances to knick-knacks will be sold, just like a regular garage sale in a driveway.

“It’s great to be able to bring people together,” sanitation, recycling and public works manager David Thompson told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We’re very excited to see those things get a new lease on life.”

The first trunk sale was a raging success despite some poor weather.

“Certainly the easiest thing to do (with items) is throw them in the trash or take them off to the depot, but extending the life of those items is the best thing to do.”

Thompson said having it all in one space makes it easier for shoppers but also reduces the burden for homeowners who no longer have to advertise their own event and attract shoppers from the other numerous garage sales around town.

The car trunk sale is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Country Club Mall parking lot.
