No jail time for man who threatened to kill Nanaimo Mountie

Jul 15, 2018 | 7:59 PM

NANAIMO — A man who threatened to kill a Nanaimo RCMP officer with a knife metres from a children’s park avoided jail time despite being sentenced to custody for committing an almost identical offence less than seven months earlier.

Court records showed Kym Arkell, 33, was given one-year probation in relation to the March 7, 2018 incident near the Altrusa Venture Park at Beban Park.

At the time, Nanaimo RCMP reported a suspect was confronted and pulled out a knife, threatening to kill the arresting officer.

Arkell was then bumped by the front end of a police cruiser and arrested following a brief chase.

Court records showed Arkell pleaded guilty to uttering threats and breaching his probation, while two other charges were dropped.

The scenario was similar to a dangerous standoff in August 2017, where Arkell pulled out a knife and threatened to kill a Mountie beside the same park.

Arkell was sentenced in January and jailed for 21 days in relation to the August takedown.

Both incidents involved armed officers in broad daylight with families and young children in the area.

During Arkell’s January sentencing hearing, Court was told he had a history of substance abuse and mental health issues.

Arkell has a long criminal history in Nanaimo, primarily involving property crimes, dating back to 2006.
