NANAIMO — Fire raged through a rural construction site on Mt. Benson, sending up a significant amount of ominous smoke which could be seen around the city.

Fire crews responded to the site of a new subdivision off Shady Mile Way on Sunday afternoon.

Numerous firefighters responded to the blaze with air support also involved.

A bystander watching the fire who's familiar with the construction site said the blaze was in the slash pile of the site, where trees and debris are left in a heap out in the sun. She predicted it was likely the high temperature which caused the pile to catch fire. There's no confirmed cause as of yet.

The fire is currently listed by the BC Wildfire Service with an estimated size of 0.01 hectares. This story will be updated with information from the service.
