Nanaimo man jailed for property crimes

NANAIMO — A man with a history of crystal meth use was sentenced to jail following a string of crimes in Nanaimo and Courtenay.

Klint Lee Whitford, 43, will serve the next 82 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property and a break-and-enter in relation to incidents last year.

Provincial Court in Nanaimo heard Tuesday Whitford was found with more than $5,000 of stolen goods in his backpack in south Nanaimo.

Whitford also admitted to stealing about $2,000 worth of valuables from the Rona store in Nanaimo’s south end.

He was also responsible for a minor theft at a Courtenay grocery store.

Whitford’s sentence included a failure to show up for a prior court appearance.

All of the valuables Whitford stole were recovered, Court heard.

Judge Ron Lamperson told Whitford he needs to deal with his drug problems.

“I think you understand if you’re not able to do that you’ll likely be back and your jail sentences are just going to get longer and longer.”

Whitford’s lawyer said his client will go to addiction counselling.

Whitford, who was already in custody, was also handed one-year probation.
