UPDATE: Nanaimo RCMP make arrest in seniors home robberies

Jun 11, 2018 | 2:23 PM

NANAIMO — Police believe they have the perpetrator behind a robbery at a Nanaimo seniors care facility under arrest.

Nanaimo RCMP announced they arrested a young man for the alleged crime, though no charges have yet been laid.

EARLIER: Police are hoping to identify a man accused of brazenly breaking into the rooms of seniors while they slept at a Nanaimo care facility.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the suspect first tried to get in through the front doors of the central Nanaimo facility, which is not being named for privacy reasons, around 4 a.m. on Friday, June 8.

O’Brien said after finding out those doors were locked, the man went around the side of the building and climbed into several suites through unlocked ground-level windows.

He said the seniors didn’t notice the man in their rooms while they slept and the break-ins weren’t reported until the next morning when one of the residents realized someone was in their room overnight.

“There are not enough adjectives in the dictionary to describe an individual who preys on the elderly,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The man also broke into several cars in the parking lot, O’Brien said.

Aside from a small amount of costume jewelry, police don’t know exactly what was taken.

The suspect was wearing a dark balaclava, dark clothing and a black hoodie with white lettering on the front. His left hand was covered in a cast, with his pinky and ring fingers wrapped in a bandage.

Anyone with information is urged to call police or Crime Stoppers.
