NANAIMO — A 15-year-old Cedar boy died in a crash in Ladysmith on the weekend.

Ladysmith Mounties report getting a call just before 5 a.m. Saturday of a single-vehicle crash on Reiber Rd., where it's believed a southbound vehicle on Brenton Page Rd. rolled down a steep, 150-foot embankment.

Police reported the 16-year-old driver and two other occupants sustained minor injuries.

The Nanaimo District Lacrosse Association posted on its Facebook page Saturday the crash left the association "broken hearted."

"A young life was taken far to soon and tragically. This midget player was an amazing young man, terrific athlete and a friend to so many," the statement read.

RCMP believe speed may have been a factor in the crash. Ladysmith Mounties and the BC Coroners Service are investigating.
