Fueling problem cancels ferry round-trip linking Duke Point and Tsawwassen

Jun 1, 2018 | 3:27 PM

NANAIMO — A pair of BC Ferries sailings between Duke Point and Tsawwassen were cancelled Friday afternoon because the Queen of Alberni was running out of fuel.

The company reported the 3:15 sailing from Tsawwassen and the 5:45 return from Duke Point were scrapped.

BC Ferries reported a commercial big rig broke down on board the ferry late Thursday night, preventing the ship from being refueled.

The company stated reservation fees will be refunded, while any reserved traffic from the cancelled sailings will be loaded on the next available crossing.

The next sailing from Tsawwassen is slated to leave Friday evening at 8:15, while the next boat out of Duke Point is 10:45 p.m.

BC Ferries spokesman Darin Guennette told NanaimoNewsNOW a broken down commercial truck was facing the wrong way late last night, forcing the Queen of Alberni to make several turns to get the truck off the boat.

He said a lot of fuel was burned during the odd incident.

“The fuel truck that was waiting essentially had to leave, it couldn’t extend its day anymore due to Transport Canada driver regulations,” Guennette said.

He said the Friday afternoon sailings were selected as good runs to cancel on the route, since there is limited commercial traffic at that time.

Guennette expected the incident would only cause limited congestion at neighbouring terminals as a result.
