Nanaimo Heritage Festival a vintage drive down memory lane

May 18, 2018 | 5:25 PM

Nanaimo — It’s 1960 all over again in Nanaimo…at least for one day.

The 2nd annual Nanaimo Heritage Festival takes place Sunday, May 20 at Maffeo Sutton Park. Thanks to some input from the community, this year’s theme will be a roller blade back to the 60s.

The 60s fashion show, Heritage Parade and vintage show and shine car show are a few of the themed events on tap, although the festival is also hosting concerts, slides, Indigenous crafts among others to attract everyone in the community.

Peter Urquhart, one of the festival’s organizers, told NanaimoNewsNOW he noticed last year getting the community as involved as they can with the planning process brought everyone together.

“It’s not like we just went out and made the decisions on everything and said this is how it’s going to be, we’re asking the community ‘How would you like this?’”

Urquhart noted lifelong Nanaimo resident and volunteer Jill Stannard being named the honourary marshal at the Heritage Parade as one example of the community making a decision and loving it.

Nanaimo Heritage Festival won’t turn down the idea of expanding over multiple days in the future if it were to continue growing, but the organizers’ first plan is to extend the event until 11:00 p.m. so they can potentially include a fireworks display in future events. There will not be fireworks this year.
