‘It’s great to see them moving:’ Nanaimo students learn how to play

May 18, 2018 | 1:45 PM

NANAIMO — Students put down their phones and picked up the pace this week to learn how much fun can be had in the sun.

The 15th annual Healthamongus event at Beban Park’s artificial turf fields had roughly 3,000 students running, dancing and challenging their teachers to a fierce match of tog-of-war.

City recreational director Deb Beck said the day of play is a much-needed example of how to be active and fit.

“I think this is really good for a lot of kids who are used to being at home, on their tablets or computers,” recreation coordinator Deb Beck told NanaimoNewsNOW. “They can see they can actually have fun outside being active, moving around actually face-to-face with their friends instead of thumb-to-thumb.”

Beck said she’s seen more youth develop without critical movement and activity skills since they’re not playing outside as much.

With so many students from classrooms across Nanaimo, Beck said Healthamongus is also a chance for students to develop better relationships and make lasting friendships.

She was quick to point out it’s also a welcome day for Nanaimo teachers since their students are exhausted when they come back to class.
