NDSS Community Field dedicated to partnership between City and school district

NANAIMO — The newly dedicated field beside NDSS is a symbol of School District 68 and the City of Nanaimo working together.

NDSS Community Field, the $3.8 million multi-sport artificial turf field within the Larry McNabb Sports Zone, was officially dedicated on Wednesday.

District superintendent John Blain told NanaimoNewsNOW he never got the chance to play on a field such as this in his entire professional football career and is happy the city and district could bring it to the community.

The previous field had a problem with mud and rabbit holes, which Blain noted was difficult for the district to mantain.

Now NDSS football players are excited to play on it and their coach thinks the pride of calling it home can improve their game.

“We want to make this a place for other teams to want to come to play because of the quality of the team we put on the field and the venue we have.” NDSS football coach Nate Stevenson said. “I really do think that’s going to happen.

NDSS and John Barsby Secondary will start their football seasons on the new turf in September. In the meantime, the district will book the field from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on school days, while the city will rent it to groups outside of those hours.

The field can also host soccer and field lacrosse.
