NANAIMO — For the third straight year a member of the VIU Mariners volleyball team has taken home the PACWEST Female Athlete of the Year award.
Fourth year Mariner Mikayla Wagner won the award after helping VIU to a CCAA national title.
Wagner was named MVP at the nationals while collecting 32 kills, 35 digs, seven blocks and three aces in three matches.

She's now a two time national gold medalist, and was named an All-Star at PACWEST provincials, and a First Team All-Star during league play in 2017-18.
The stat line for the White Rock native in her Senior year was 216 kills, and 257 offensive points to go along with 24 blocks and 154 digs.

She was also ranked number one in the PACWEST in hitting percentage at .304.

Mariners coach Shane Hyde notes Wagner has been a huge key to the team's success.
“She has started to become a real team leader and it’s been so much fun watching her become one of the best players in the country," said Hyde.

VIU's volleyball team has had a lock on the PACWEST Female Athlete of the Year award since 2016 with Tylar Turnbull winning two years ago and Megan Rosenlund taking the honours in 2017.
