South Nanaimo home hit with gunshots

Mar 20, 2018 | 9:16 AM

NANAIMO — Police are searching for suspects after a Nanaimo home was hit by gunfire.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said they were called around 6:15 a.m. on March 20 for a report of several shots fired at a home on Wildlife Pl., off Jingle Pot Rd.

He said no one in the home was injured and witnesses reported seeing a car leaving the area after the shots were heard, as well as two people running away.

It appeared at least one shot hit a front window of the home.

A heavy police presence was seen scattered throughout the Buttertubs area as officers flooded the scene. So far, no arrests have been made.

“There’s always a risk (to the public) when firearms are involved. At this point it’s too early in the investigation to say if the home was targeted and why it happened,” O’Brien said.

Wildlife Pl. is less than a kilometre away from Hawthorne Corner, where a man was killed in a targeted daylight shooting in January. It’s unclear if the two incidents are related.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
