Man dies after being ejected from vehicle in Nanoose crash

Mar 19, 2018 | 12:44 PM

NANAIMO — A man is dead following a horrific single-vehicle crash on Hwy. 19 in Nanoose Bay.

Central Island Traffic Services RCMP Cpl. Darrin Ramey told NanaimoNewsNOW it happened Friday at 5 p.m. in the northbound lanes near the top of Nanoose hill, near the Chevron gas station.

“The vehicle lost control and crashed off-road right, rolled several times, the driver, (who was) the only person in the vehicle, was ejected.”

Ramey said several motorists immediately stopped in an effort to revive the man, including an on-duty Nanaimo RCMP officer and a doctor.

“Fire and ambulance attended and did CPR for approximately 30 minutes before he was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Ramey said the man, a Parksville resident in his early 60s, was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol is believed to be a factor.

He noted several witnesses are being helped by Oceanside RCMP’s Victim Services after witnessing the aftermath of the crash.

Northbound traffic on Hwy. 19 through Nanoose Bay was closed and a detour in place for several hours as police investigated.
