Nanaimo hosts BC Junior Closed squash tournament

NANAIMO — The best junior squash players in the province are at the Nanaimo Squash Club this weekend for the BC Junior Closed tournament.
 
There are 113 athletes between the ages of 12 and 19 participating.
 
The local contingent includes Cole Adam, Stefane Prairie, Aidan Christopher, and Matthew Stalberg in the U17 boys division and Olivia Lenko and Alena Chandler are competing in the girls U15 category.
 
It’s free to watch with the Nanaimo club located on Wallace Street.
 
The matches will run all weekend culminating with the finals from 12:30 p.m to 2 p.m on Sunday.
 
According to Squash BC the player to watch this weekend is ten time junior champion Ryan Picken.
 
The 18-year-old Vancouver product has won his age category for the past ten straight years and he’s going for his eleventh in his final year of junior eligibility. 
 
Nanaimo’s junior squash program has about 20 players involved and they are coached by PSA World Tour Professional squash coach Richard Birks.
