Nanaimo man dies in snowmobiling accident near Whistler

Feb 12, 2018 | 1:50 PM

NANAIMO — A Nanaimo man is dead after plunging more than 200 feet down a slope while snowmobiling near Whistler.

Whistler RCMP said the 52-year-old fell when a ledge of snow he had stopped on collapsed on Saturday afternoon near Callaghan Lake Provincial Park.

Police said the man was declared dead at the scene, despite efforts by other snowmobilers and search and rescue crews to dig him out of the snow and give CPR.

The incident does not appear suspicious, RCMP said, noting the avalanche danger in the region was moderate at the time. Avalanche Canada warned people to use caution around cornices.
