RCMP question Nanaimo City staff; police say ‘woman arrested’

Feb 1, 2018 | 4:25 PM

NANAIMO — RCMP members were at Nanaimo City Hall Thursday investigating an incident, NanaimoNewsNOW has learned.

A source with direct knowledge of the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed investigators were there and members of City staff have been interviewed related to an incident at City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

CUPE Local 401 president Blaine Gurrie confirmed to NanaimoNewsNOW his members were among those questioned by RCMP but would not say why or what it was related to.

When asked, Nanaimo RCMP deferred comment to Island District spokesperson Cpl. Tammy Douglas.

Douglas was asked specifically about an incident at City Hall. She said in an email Island District’s “General Investigation Section have an open and active investigation into an allegation of threats being made.

“As a result, a woman was arrested last night for uttering threats…The woman has since been released on a Promise to Appear with conditions for court at a later date,” Douglas said.

She said investigators are completing a “fulsome investigation and will be speaking to all those involved.”

Douglas said the name of the woman cannot be released because no information has been sworn with the Crown and no charges have been laid.

She would not say where the alleged incident or arrest happened to protect the identity of the woman.

The City declined comment, saying “the City does not comment on personnel matters.”
