Nanaimo RCMP hand out overwhelming number of reflective arm bands

NANAIMO — The side of the roads should look a little brighter and safer after a major awareness campaign by Nanaimo RCMP.

On Wednesday, Dec. 13, RCMP handed out more than 500 reflective bands in less than an hour at University Village Mall.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said he was astounded and thrilled to see so many bands handed out in such a surprisingly short amount of time, with many people even asking for extras to give to their friends and families.

The bands are roughly the length of a ruler and can snap on to an arm, leg, bike or scooter.

O’Brien said they’re a perfect way to cut down on common road accidents, such as the one Thursday morning when a young girl was lightly hit by a car near the intersection of Wakesiah Ave. and Second St.

“We see it time and time again and dark clothing won’t keep you safe,” he said. “Just to put this on your leg, arm or bike is enough to keep you safe. It’s enough to catch the attention of the driver.”

In the last month, RCMP handed out over 1,500 of the reflective bands at various spots around Nanaimo. O’Brien said RCMP will continue to hand them out in Central Nanaimo and then work northward through the city.
