Nanaimo Christian School earns first ever berth to senior girls volleyball provincials

Nov 20, 2017 | 6:46 PM

CHEMAINUS – Nanaimo Christian School has won the senior girls volleyball Island Championships.

They’ll move on to the provincials in Fernie to battle for a BC title for the first time in the school’s history.

Asa Liu was selected the tournament MVP while Kassandra Richardson was named an all-star.

NCS Athletic Director Breanne Quist says Liu is an international student in Grade 10 who was very humble about receiving the MVP honour.

“She’s had so many aces, and her spikes are not returned by anybody. She’s got such a hard swing,” said Quist.

There were a total of six matches in the Island Championships and in five of them Nanaimo Christian didn’t drop a set.

They did need three sets to beat Lake Cowichan in their first head to head match, but went on to sweep them in the tournament final 25-17 and 25-8.

The run to a Vancouver Island championship is even more impressive since there are no Grade 12 students on the roster.

Quist says the team is all in Grade 11 with three additions from Grade 10.

“It’s a really encouraging thing for the girls to know that we’re not losing anybody going into next year and we have two years with this same group of girls who are only going to get stronger as a team,” said Quist.

The single A girls provincials go from November 30 to December 2 at Fernie Secondary School.

It won’t be until later this week that Nanaimo Christian will find out their ranking for the tournament.
