Injured hiker rescued from Lantzville Foothills

Oct 14, 2017 | 10:01 AM

LANTZVILLE — A woman has a suspected broken ankle after losing her footing in a steep section of trail in the Lantzville Foothills.

Lantzville Volunteer Fire Department (LVFD) acting chief John Marment told NanaimoNewsNOW the woman, in her 40’s, was hiking alone in the Copley Ridge area off Aulds Rd. late Friday (Oct. 14) morning when she fell and called 911.

He said finding the woman was a challenge since her cell reception was weak, preventing LVFD and BC Ambulance crews from pinpointing where she was.

“A man walking in the area then came down and said he spotted the lady which led us to the trail she was on.”

Marment said a stretcher with a wheel attachment was used to get the woman out of the bush and to Nanaimo Hospital for treatment.

He said this case is another example of the “great working relationship” between LVFD and the BC Ambulance Service.

“75 per cent of our (LVFD) calls are for medical aid so lots of time my guys make it before ambulance and start working on the patient, or we arrive at the same time and assist BC Ambulance and help get them to Nanaimo Hospital.”

Marment noted the rescue took about two hours.

He adds this is a critical reminder to tell someone where you’re hiking in the backcountry and when you expect to return.
