NANAIMO — Coastal Fire Centre is reporting a big drop in the number of human-caused wildfires this year.

The Coastal Fire Centre's Jeanne Larsen reports there have been 77 person caused fires on the South Coast since April 1, scorching nearly 7,000 hectares of land.

She said the ten year average of person caused fires for this time of year is 121.

“With the weather trends that we've had since the spring people are a lot more aware of the fire danger that's out there and they are being more cautious.”

Larsen said while progress in cutting down human-caused fires has been made there's still lots of work to do.

“We are still seeing a lot of people flicking their lit cigarettes out of cars.”

The fire danger rating for the entire mid island region remains at extreme.
