Public safety behind additional work on popular Oceanside trail

NANAIMO – More work is being done on the Regional District of Nanaimo’s hugely popular Rail Trail connecting Coombs and Parksville.

After some trail maintenance, a temporary prohibition on horses was lifted June 1. The RDN’s manager of parks services Wendy Marshall said they’ll now be putting up some signage letting people know the etiquette and rules around sharing a trail with horses.

Other work planned this month is aimed at protecting pedestrians, according to Marshall, including installing pedestrian beacons at two points on Highway 4A.

“On the crossing over Church Rd. and at Station in Coombs,” said Marshall. “Those are to provide some safe access for pedestrians crossing those busy roads. So the beacons will warn motorists that there are people using the crosswalks.”
