VIDEO: Nanaimo dance workshop honours the spirit of local waters

NANAIMO — Down by the water, where the green grass grows, Nanaimo women are getting in touch with the rhythms of nature and the Millstone River.

On Tuesday, May 16, several women stood on the shores of the Millstone River for the Body of Water project, a life experience and dance class presented by the Crimson Coast Dance Society. It finishes on Saturday, May 20 with a walking tour presentation of the river and also the ocean at Neck Point Park.

Daniela Castell, who’s helping lead the experience, said it helps people recognize how crucial water is to their everyday lives.

“Every time I turn the tap on I have a relationship with water. What’s happening for all of us around the world is we’re just waking up to the bond we inherently have with water and in that waking up we’re becoming more conscious about how we use it.”

To emulate the water they’re taking inspiration from, Castell said the workshop is very “go with the flow” and different every day.

Christie Grant, who’s been at the water every day for the project, said she joined to reconnect with her childhood.

“I’ve swum in this river as a child, so now I get to have a completely different experience. I’m hoping to be able to come down here with my family and friends and enjoy it as it is, because it’s a wonderful place and that’s all we need.”

The walking tour gets underway Saturday at 3 p.m. at Millstone River.
