Nanaimo man faces new charge in historic sex crimes investigation

Apr 6, 2017 | 6:08 PM

NANAIMO — An elderly Nanaimo man faces a fifth sexual assault charge in relation to alleged historic crimes in Central Saanich in the 1970’s and 80’s.

Central Saanich Police Department Cpl. Dan Cottingham said Geradus Peters, 81, has been charged with a new count of sexual assault. Four previous sexual assault charges are in relation to alleged incidents involving underage girls between 1975 and 1986.

Peters has also been charged with one count of indecent assault.

Cottingham said police are interviewing other possible victims.

“It is my understanding there are two additional (alleged victims) that have come forward with allegations and their allegations are still being investigated at this time,” Cottingham said.

Peters had his case adjourned until May 4 during an appearance Thursday in Victoria Law Courts.

He was released on bail on several conditions in early February, after being arrested at his Nanaimo home in January.

Cottingham earlier told NanaimoNewsNOW Peters was a stone mason for many years and was not in a position of authority when the alleged assaults took place.
