Bus slams into building at busy Nanaimo intersection

NANAIMO — Breakfast came with more than a caffeine boost at a Nanaimo McDonald’s Wednesday morning.

A small bus crashed into the McDonald’s at the corner of Bowen Rd. and Dufferin Cres. at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.

According to RCMP, the driver lost control on the opposite side of the intersection from the McDonald’s and plowed through the intersection on a red light. Mounties said the 53-year-old man may have had a “medical emergency.”

The bus hit another car, which in turn crashed into a delivery vehicle. The bus then slammed into the restaurant.

RCMP said driver of the bus and a woman driving the first car hit were taken to hospital for assessment.

No one inside the McDonald’s was injured but the building was damaged.

The crash is under investigation.
