New funding helps Lantzville sewer conversion

NANAIMO — Aging infrastructure in Lantzville is on its way out.

More than $4 million from both the provincial and federal government will help convert upwards of 300 Upper Lantzville homes from septic fields to sewer lines.

Mayor Colin Haime said they had to act quickly otherwise the town would find themselves in a smelly situation.

“With the age of the homes we were going to run into an ever increasing likelihood of failing septic fields. When that occurs the runoff comes off the properties, into the ditches and out into the ocean,” he said.

The $4 million will soften the blow to homeowners, who will still cover the remaining $2.2 million costs the service upgrade in the Winchelsea area.

Haime said this upgrade means they can better handle any sewer issues in the future.

Nearly half of Lantzville is expected to be connected to sewer lines by the end of the third phase of conversions, which have happened over the past decade.
