Nanaimo Chamber polls members on events centre proposal

Mar 7, 2017 | 1:11 PM

NANAIMO — A survey of Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce members shows most business operators who responded oppose the City’s events centre proposal.

Chamber CEO Kim Smythe told NanaimoNewsNOW 65 per cent of their members who responded would vote no to borrowing $80 million to build the proposed downtown facility.

26 per cent of Chamber members would vote yes, while eight per cent are undecided, according to the survey.

Smythe said that just shy of 20 per cent of their 700 members took part in the anonymous survey.

“We’re not publishing this to sway the vote one way or the other, but to remind all of the community to vote on this referendum and have their opinion officially registered,” Smythe stated in a release.

Smythe said the Chamber has not taken a formal position on the events centre.

The final of two advanced voting opportunities for the events centre takes place Wednesday, March 8 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

General voting day for the proposed facility is on Saturday, March 11.

Complete voting details are here.
