Nanaimo growing in every direction

Mar 1, 2017 | 10:46 AM

NANAIMO — According to the most recent statistics from the City, Nanaimo is expanding in every direction.

Dale Lindsay, director of community development, appeared in front of City Council on Feb. 20 to illustrate which neighbourhoods were growing the most.

“We see growth from one end of the community to the other. It’s not a North versus South,” he said.

This is a reversal of a recent trend.

Lindsay said in the last decade, many areas in the city such as Central Nanaimo and Departure Bay were losing people.

“That seems to turn around in the last five years,” he said. “Every neighbourhood has at least some positive growth.”

The South End, Westwood and Northfield areas saw the greatest population change from the last census in 2011.

In his presentation, Lindsay pinpointed Townsite, Departure Bay and downtown Nanaimo as also having significant and important growth.

Overall, according to the 2016 Census there are 90,504 people living in Nanaimo.
