Clippers come up short with 4-1 loss in Victoria

Jan 13, 2017 | 5:52 AM

COLWOOD — The Victoria Grizzlies dominance over the Nanaimo Clippers continued on Thursday with a 4-1 decision at the Q Centre.

Nanaimo did outplay Victoria in the first period but the Grizzlies broke the game open with two goals in the second period.

Cole Pickup snapped a shot by Austin Roden to make the game 1-0 and then in the final minute of the second, new Grizzly Shawn O’Malley extended the lead.

The Clippers made a strong push early in the third with Ben Solin notching a power play goal behind Tony Rehm.

But Victoria ended the come back hope with two goals in a 35 second span by TJ Friedmann and Lucas Clark.

Nanaimo’s new acquisitions over the past week did give the team some extra energy and that showed with the team outshooting the Grizzlies 38-28.

The Clippers also won the special teams battle, going 1/5 on the power play and 4/4 on the penalty kill.

In the end though, the Grizzlies have a 6-0 record against the Clippers with two games left in the season series on the final weekend in February.

On Friday Nanaimo hosts the Powell River Kings and that game will be special for the club, with captain Spencer Hewson playing in his 200th career BCHL game.

Also defenseman Shawn Guison and Sean Buchanan will return to the lineup from suspension.

Nanaimo has a 2-3 record against Powell River this season.
