Air ambulances can now land on waterfront Port land

Nov 16, 2016 | 2:06 PM

NANAIMO — An upgrade to a heliport near Nanaimo’s waterfront will allow better access for B.C.’s air ambulance helicopters working around central Vancouver Island.

The Nanaimo Port Authority and Pacific Heliport Services say the upgrade to the heliport on the port authority’s cruise centre lands has received approval for flight operations.

Helijet’s scheduled chopper service to Vancouver and Victoria operates from the site, and if required, the heliport can now also accommodate round-the-clock air ambulance operations.

The heliport at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is temporarily closed due to construction nearby.
