Two VIU Mariners named PACWEST Athletes of the Week

NANAIMO — Two VIU Mariners won PACWEST Player of the Week Awards in the final week of October.

Rachel Jones won the Female Soccer Athlete of the Week after netting the winner in the provincial semi finals last Friday.

She also had a very strong final in helping VIU to a 1-0 win over Douglas College.

On top of that Jones was named the MVP of provincials as the Mariners advanced to the CCAA Nationals.

In Men’s basketball Usama Zaid was the Male Athlete of the Week.

The California native had 38 points in his first game as a Mariner to go along with 11 rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and three steals.

It was a spectacular debut as VIU won their season debut against island rival Camosun on Saturday.
