UPDATE: Mother and infant not injured after crash in downtown Nanaimo

Nov 2, 2016 | 9:00 AM

NANAIMO — A mother and her infant child were not injured in an early morning crash at Comox Road and Terminal Avenue.

However two men were sent to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and are expected to be released today. RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien says it happened around 5:30 a.m. with weather and road conditions being the major factors.

“A sedan with two males in it proceeded through the red light on Comox. It was hit broadside by an SUV driven by an adult female with her three month old baby,” said O’Brien.

Traffic was backed up for several hours as police and fire crews cleared the scene. O’Brien hopes this incident will resonate with other drivers and help them to remember to slow down and drive for the conditions.

“We certainly expect a number of accidents throughout the day. The contibuting factors on the one we just dealt with were weather and road conditions, and those will come in to play,” said O’Brien. “People have to keep their speeds down, you will not have the traction, you will not be able to stop. You have to keep a greater distance between yourself and the car that you’re following.”

O’Brien notes that impatience may have contributed to Wednesday’s incident but it doesn’t appear that speed or alcohol were factors.
