Clippers drop 2-1 overtime decision to Trail

Oct 8, 2016 | 6:56 AM

NANAIMO – The Clippers probably deserved a better fate, but lost lost 2-1 in overtime to the Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday.

Nanaimo outshot Trail 35-22 and did control a lot of the play but ultimately fell one goal short.

The game was scoreless through 20 minutes with Zach Dyment and Nanaimo’s Austin Rodin both looking sharp in net.

In the second period Trail scored a transition goal after a strong shift of Nanaimo pressure.

It was Josh Laframboise who banged in a rebound to give the Smoke Eaters a 1-0 lead at the intermission break.

Adam Donnelly sparked the Clippers in the third period after winning a fight against Kyle Chernenkoff.

And then with five minutes to play Ben Solin converted a rebound to send the game to overtime.

In the extra session Laframboise snapped a low shot by Rodin to give Trail the win.

Special teams were not a huge factor in the game as both teams went 0/3 on the power play.

A tough divisional test is up next for Nanaimo with the red hot Powell River Kings visiting Frank Crane Arena on Saturday.
