Rock VIU event welcomes students to the Nanaimo campus

NANAIMO — Vancouver Island University has been holding events all week to welcome students to their Nanaimo campus.

The biggest of those is called ‘Rock Viu’ and it runs all day Thursday.

VIU recruitment officer Heather Burke says they are expecting as many as 1200 people to take part.

“There’s a number of activities that run right through until dusk when there’s an outdoor moving happening.  There’s a President’s Reception for parents and families, there’s an information fair which runs from 11:30am to 2pm which connects students with service and support areas on campus,” said Burke.

Some programs at the university have already started, but Burke hopes this event will ease the stress for the many students who begin classes on Tuesday.

“Students are paired with others from their faculty so they really get to know people before the first day of class so they’re not walking into a sea of faces that they’ve never seen before.  The goal is to get students connected with their peers, with their faculty, so it can reduce some of that first day anxiety.”
