NANAIMO — The 25-year-old man involved in a long standoff with RCMP on Monday has been charged.

This after the mounties say they got a report around 8pm Monday night about a man texting death threats to his ex-wife.

When police arrived at his home the man wouldn’t come out, which led to a five hour exchange involving a Crisis Negotiator and the Emergency Response Team.

The man made a court appearance in Nanaimo Provincial Court on Tuesday and was released with conditions.

His next court appearance is September 6th.

EARLIER:

A tense situation at a central Nanaimo home, following allegations of death threats and a man who police believed had a gun.

Nanaimo RCMP say they got a report around 8 o’clock Monday night about a 25-year-old man sending death threats via text message to his ex-wife.

Const. Gary O’Brien says after making sure the ex-wife was safe, police went to the man’s central Nanaimo home.

He says the man, who was inside with another woman, refused to come out.

“Our crisis negotiator responded, along with the ERT (Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team) and after about two hours, when it was decided the male would not leave the home, they entered and arrested him without incident,” said O’Brien.

Police say the woman inside the home with the man came out after several hours, uninjured.

“ERT was called because of the death threats issued and also the fact there was a firearm believed to be in the home.”

O’Brien says a gun was found in the home, but it’s not clear if it was a real firearm or if it was loaded.

The 25-year-old remains in custody and no charges have been laid, according to O’Brien.
