Brush fire near Parkway quickly handled by Nanaimo Fire

NANAIMO — A brush fire near the Nanaimo Parkway Friday morning could have been a lot worse according to Nanaimo Fire Rescue

Assistant Chief Timothy Doyle says an engine and a water tender responded to the call just after 9:30 Friday morning to a brush fire about one kilometre south of the Tourist Information centre at Northfield Road.

Doyle says the fire was set back from the Parkway Trail, in an area where there has been an on-going issue with squatters living in the bushes.

The fire, according to Doyle, grew to about 700 square feet and started to climb up a few larger trees before crews doused the flames just over 90 minutes after they arrived on the scene.
