Young girl dies after tragic accident in Parksville RV park

PARKSVILLE — A nightmare for a family on vacation in Parksville.

Oceanside RCMP say a four-year-old girl is dead after being run over in the Paradise Adventure RV Park early Wednesday afternoon.

The girl and her family were here visiting from Calgary.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman says the girl was lying on her stomach on a skateboard when she ended up in the path of a slow-moving vehicle around 2:30.

“She was actually riding the skateboard on her tummy, so she was very low and hard to see. It doesn’t look like through any fault of anyone she was run over and died an hour later,” said Foreman.

An off-duty doctor was one of the first people on the scene. An ambulance took the girl to the Parksville weigh scales to wait for an air ambulance.

Despite efforts to save her, she died about an hour after the accident, just before being loaded onto an air ambulance, according to police.

Foreman says no charges are being considered against the driver.

“After talking to the traffic folks there, it doesn’t look like there will be any sort of further investigation into this driver. All accounts were that he was going extremely slow at the time and the young girl had sort of lost control and entered where he was driving.”

The vehicle, Foreman says, was a hybrid Cadillac station wagon/SUV.

Everyone who was there, including the first responders, are traumatized, he says.

“Nobody was in very good space afterwards. I can imagine for this driver it was a terrible circumstance and he feels devastated.”

The family was camping in Parksville with other children, according to Foreman.

“There’s probably no way to describe what they’re going through. A tragic loss.”

He says they will make sure anyone on “their side of the house” gets the help and support they need to deal with this horrible event.
