Dock+ gets $3million boost

The success of the Port Authorities Dock Plus facility is attracting attention, support and funding for expansion.
Since taking over the former Port Fish processing plant on Harbour Road, the Port Alberni Port Authority has transformed the building into a hive of seafood and food related businesses, and more businesses want to join in, according to Mike Carter, the Port’s VP of Operations.
“It’s fantastic news and it also shows that the Dock+ as a food hub is working well,” he said. “Most of our 7 anchor tenants are looking for more space, they’re outgrowing the building, and that’s a good problem to have.”
The BC Agriculture Investment Fund has announced a grant of almost $3 million to help expand the Dock Plus facility by 3000 square feet for additional processing space for shellfish seed producer Nova Harvest and for Huu-ay-aht First Nations Fisheries.
Carter says the expanded facility will allow for the hiring of 15 new people to work in the fast-growing local marine economy.
“I just can’t stress enough how big this is for a small port, and economic opportunity for jobs and other spin-off work that comes with that and employment around the Dock+ that this is creating,” he said.
Planning has now begun on how the expansion will be done, with hopes that work can begin this Fall.
