Fire Department hires security crew

With no smoke alarms, fire alarms or fire supression system, the Port Alberni Fire Department has contracted a security company for round-the-clock firewatch at the Port Pub.

Mayor Sharie Minions said the city ordered owner Peter Wang to restore the vandalized fire safety system after it was deemed inoperable.

“In this case, the owner did not comply, and so the city, as a safety precaution took that on, and we will be recovering the cost from the building owner,” she said.

Minions said the remedial action order has been ignored by the Courtenay-based owner, and the city will look in to fixing the building themselves and billing him through taxes.
