NANAIMO — One person was airlifted to hospital with burns after a motor home ignited along a rural road.

Emergency responders from Nanaimo Fire Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services and RCMP were called out to South Forks Rd., south of the intersection with Nanaimo Lakes Rd. around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9 after an RV, apparently parked on the side of the road, caught fire.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue told NanaimoNewsNOW an adult male was out of the motor home when they arrived on scene and was being tended to by paramedics for serious burns.

Fire Rescue also noted the RCMP are taking over the investigation into the cause of the blaze.

NanaimoNewsNOW has reached out to the local detachment for comment and will update this article as necessary.

An air ambulance was dispatched to scene, landing nearby, and around a one kilometre section of South Forks Rd. was closed as a result of the incident.

Emergency response to the scene was somewhat chaotic for local first responders.

Firefighters from Nanaimo Fire Rescue were initially paged out, however they discovered the location of the incident was outside their service area.

Dispatchers in Surrey then tasked Extension Volunteer Fire Department members who began responding, but ultimately turned back after not being granted the required documentation by the provincial Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness to respond to a call outside their coverage zone.

NanaimoNewsNOW confirmed the area where the fire took place is a virtual ‘no man’s land’ and is not part of any local fire department’s jurisdiction.

Members from Nanaimo Fire Rescue continued onto scene, despite the callout being around two kilometres outside of the City boundaries, to extinguish the fire.

South Forks Rd. was blocked off for around a kilometre to allow space for emergency crews to work, as well as for a landing zone of an air ambulance. (Jordan Davidson/NanaimoNewsNOW)
